Ahead of regional elections in Sicily, the leader of Italy’s 5 Star Movement suggested the Italian region should look at Lagos, Nigeria as an example for development, during a political rally. “Lagos is one of the biggest city in the world. It’s the the capital of Nigeria, 5 millions of citizens, at the heart of Africa,” 5 Star Movement leader Beppe Grillo said. “It is considered one of the most liveable city in the world. If you check picture it’s amazing, it looks Las Vegas: green areas, beaches, palms,” he continued.
What’s wrong with his statement?
- Lagos is not the capital of Nigeria. The capital is Abuja since 1991.
- Lagos doesn’t have 5 millions of citizens. According to the UN, it has 14 million. Local authorities say 21 millions citizens.
- Lagos is not the most liveable city in the world, it’s at the 10 least liveable cities in the world according to a recent survey published by The Telegraph. It is ranked 139 out of 140 cities just before Damascus.
