A roadmap for Catalonia independence?

Convergència Democràtica de Catalunya  (CDC, the party of the Catalan president Artur Mas) y Esquerra Republicana  (ERC) agreed on Monday on a roadmap for the independence of Catalonia from the Kingdom of Spain:

  • In case of victory in 27 September regional elections, these two parties will draft a Constitution including the unilateral declaration of independence of Catalonia;
  • This Constitution will be put to a referendum.
  • If approved Catalonia will declare its independency by March 2017.
  • The objective of President Mas and other Catalans parties is to make the 27 September elections a plebiscite in favor of the independence.

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy already criticized this agreement:

“bad for both Catalans and the Spanish, both in substance and in form. It is bad in the substance because it goes against the sense of history. It breaks more than 500 years of life together, breaks all the ties that unite us and makes many Catalans stop being Spanish and European.” (Sputnik News)
