Despite opinions of many EU leaders, EU to extend Russia sanctions

The European Union’s top diplomats have agreed to extend sanctions against Russia by six months to keep pressure on Moscow over the conflict in eastern Ukraine. (The Guardian)

Italian PM Matteo Renzi, German Foreign Minister Steinmeier, and incoming EU presidency Slovakia pushed to lift sanctions against Moscow while Britain and other Nordic and eastern European member states called for governments to maintain their tough stance. (Reuters)

After Juncker’s visit to Russia, also Austrian Foreign Minister Sebastain Kurz said: “I believe that we should gradually come to a modus in which for every implementation of the Minsk Protocol, for every single step, sanctions will gradually be lifted in return.” ORF TV.
