Germany: Social Democrats (PES) won election in Hamburg defeating Merkel’s party

The German Social Democrats clearly won the election in Hamburg (considered a fortress for the centre left along with Berlin and Bremen) last weekend with the 45,7% of the votes. Angela Merkel’s party CDU (EPP) lost 6% compared to the previous elections hold in 2011. (Süddeutschen Zeitung)

The Eurosceptic party Alternative for Germany (AfD), which wants to force crisis-hit countries such as Greece out of the single currency, looked likely to win its first seats in a west German parliament. (Daily Telegraph)
