Iceland withdraws its application to join the EU

Nordic island decided to withdraw its application to join the European Union. The decision was made public by its Foreign Minister Gunnar Bragi Sveinsson. Many Icelanders expressed outrage because the decision had not been discussed by the parliament’s foreign affairs committee. (Iceland Review)

One of the reason of this decision is the European Common Fisheries Policy.

Iceland criticised EU quota policies that sometimes force fishermen to throw back caught fish – often dead fish – that are either too small, part of too large a catch, or simply of the wrong type. (Deutsche Welle, Reuters)
