Jean Clude Juncker, President of the European Commission, has threatened to resign if Martin Schulz will not be reconfirmed President of the European Parliamentbeyond the 2½-year term he agreed to in 2014. “I can no longer guarantee my future as European Commission president,” he said in a closed doors meeting as reported by Der Spiegel.
Commission spokesperson didn’t deny the quote by Juncker but excluded his resignation.
Schulz’ mandate as President of the European Parliament will come to an end in January 2017. There is an agreement between the two main European political parties EPP and PSE about the turnover for the presidency. The main obstacle for the respect of the agreement is to find a good way out for Schulz. (The European Post)
