Merkel’s party CDU insists to stick to EPP-Socialists agreement taken at the beginning of the legislature. The agreement says the second half of the legislature, the President of the European Parliament must be a representative of the EPP. “EPP and Socialists have an agreement. This agreement is still valid,” says Hasselfeld, deputy chairperson of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group at the Bundestag.
“Schulz makes people ‘angry’ about EU” says CDU’s Secretary General Peter Tauber.

The two top candidates from the EPP could be Italian MEP Antonio Tajani (also former European Commissioner) and French MEP Alain Lamassoure.
