New ‘X’ Gender option added to NYC birth certificates

New York City will allow people who don’t identify as male or female to change the gender designation on their birth certificates to “X”, NbcNY reports.

“There are plenty of New Yorkers who don’t identify as either male or female. Gender is a spectrum for many folks. It’s not a fixed thing,” said Corey Johnson, the New York city council speaker. “When you don’t have something as basic and essential as a birth certificate that identifies you as who you really are, it’s a problem.” The council passed the bill Wednesday, and the city’s board of health also signed off on the new rules.
