One million in Italy against legal recognition and adoption rights to same-sex couples

A mass rally was held in Rome on Saturday in defence of the traditional family, as Italy debates whether to grant legal recognition and limited adoption rights to same-sex couples. (Euronews)

The provision to permit homosexuals to adopt the biological children of their partner is the most hotly contested, even within Renzi’s coalition. (AFP)

The interior minister, Angelino Alfano, a member of the New Centre-Right party, is one of the most vocal critics of the so-called “step-child provision”. This week, Alfano suggested he would seek to overturn the legislation if it passed by calling for a referendum on the measure. (The Guardian)

Many Italian MEPs participated at the Family Day in Rome. Among them Italian EPP head of delegation Elisabetta Gardini and the Vice President of the European Parliament Antonio Tajani.

“It is good to see that so many Italians went to go outside to join the pro-family demonstrations and to defend the definition of marriage between one man and one woman. It shows that the definition of marriage is not an EU competence,” comments Leo Van Doesburg, head of EU Affairs for the European Christian Political Movement.
