Today, “The State of Palestine” officially joined the International Criminal Court, The Hague (Netherlands)
What can happen now?
The ICC can probe and prosecute alleged war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide in the West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem. It can investigate alleged perpetrators from any country, including Israel, which is not a member of the court, if certain conditions are met.
Reaction of Israel
“When the Palestinians announced the accession to the ICC in January 2015, Israel reacted by freezing the transfer of Palestinian tax revenues, plunging the West Bank into a deeper financial crisis. At the end of March, following the recommendation of the defence ministry, the Israeli Defence Forces and the internal security agency Shabbak, Israel announced an end to this policy, due in part to fears of increased threat of instability and violence in the West Bank as a result of the financial crisis”.
Reaction of Palestinian Authority
Chief PLO negotiator Saeb Erekat already pointed out that the ICC had already launched an initial investigation into alleged Israeli war crimes against Palestinians, in addition to its “illegal” settlement construction and expansion activities.
