“Some NGOs are now leaning towards the limit of territorial waters. Human traffickers take advantage of their presence,” Frontex Chief says

“Are there any proofs of contacts between human traffickers and NGOs?  In 2014-2015, rescue operations were taking place half way between Italy and Libya. Some NGOs are now leaning towards the limit of territorial waters. Human traffickers take advantage of their presence,” Director of Frontex, Fabrice Liggeri said in an interview to Marco Bresolin from La Stampa.

The intervention of the Director of the European Border and Coast Guard Agency arrives after many days of polemics in Italy after Carmelo Zuccaro, the prosecutor of Catania (Sicily) denounced that: “some NGOs could be financed by traffickers and I know of contact (between them). This trafficking is currently bringing in as much money as the drug trade.”

Also Italian Foreign Minister Angelino Alfano took a strong stance on the issue saying: “Prosecutor suggesting traffickers may pay some NGOs is 100% right.”
