Spanish PM accepts King’s request to form a government (maybe)

Acting Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy on Thursday accepted the Spanish king’s request to try to form a government, on the basis that his Popular Party (PP) won the most votes at the repeat election of June 26. But he fell short of promising that he will actually bid for reinstatement, leaving the door open to the possibility of a third election later this year if no nominee steps up – or if one does but fails to gain sufficient backing at an investiture vote in Congress.
