Statue of WW2 sailor kissing nurse vandalised by ‘#MeToo’

Police in Florida are looking for the vandal who painted “#MeToo” on the leg of the nurse in the “Unconditional Surrender” statue, CNN reports. The statue is modeled afteran iconic photo taken in Times Square in 1945, showing a woman dressed in a white uniform being embraced and kissed by a sailor to celebrate the end of World War II.

In more recent years some have suggested the photo depicts an act of sexual assault, given the fact sailor did not have nurse’s consent to kiss her.

The MeToo movement has shone a light on historic claims of sexual assault, and opened up a debate about consent and assault.
