The attacker Cherif Chekatt shouted “Allahu Akbar”, a French prosecutor has said.
“Shooting in the centre of Strasbourg. Everyone should stay at home and wait for clarification of the situation,” Strasbourg’s deputy mayor, Alain Fontanel, wrote on Twitter.
French president Emmanuel Macron is being kept informed of the situation and is sending his interior minister, Christophe Castaner, to the eastern French city, an Elysee palace official said.

The shooter in Strasbourg is ‘fiché S‘. It means he is known to police as a possible threat to public security.
Police have named the suspect of the Strasbourg Christmas terror attack as local Cherif Chekatt.
The president of the European Parliament Antonio Tajani says the EU “will not be intimidated” and he decides to continue the plenary works.
