The Guardian: “Brand new Macron, same old colonialism” after French President’s remark that Africa has a ‘civilizational’ problem

French President Emmanuel Macron is facing a social media backlash for talking about Africa having a “civilizational” problem and women having “seven or eight children.” The remarks were made at the G20 summit on Saturday, when a reporter from the Ivory Coast asked the French president why there was no Marshall Plan for Africa, as reported by Politico Europe.

Macron’s statements make the blood boil not because they are novel but because they make no mention of the root causes of the challenges of which the president speaks,” she continues.
