Turkey: football player gets 12-match ban over ‘political’ statements supporting Kurds

Football player of Kurdish origins Deniz Naki from Diyarbakır’s Amedspor has been given a 12-match ban for making political statements, adding pressure on a club that has already seen a number of restrictions in the past week. (Today’s Zeman)

“We dedicate this victory as a gift to those who have lost their lives and those wounded in the repression in our land which has lasted for more than 50 days,” Naki, 26, wrote in a Facebook post after a match. (The Guardian)

That’s why Turkey’s Professional Football Disciplinary Committee (PDFK) issued the 12-match ban for Naki for making “ideological propaganda” and behaving in a manner contrary to the spirit of “sportsmanship.”
